Blyth BESS in South Australia to Support Renewable Grid

by Harry

EPC contractors NAOH Energy, based in Italy, and Elecnor, based in Spain, have successfully commissioned the Blyth Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in South Australia for Neoen Australia. The 238.5 MW / 477 MWh facility is located 150 kilometers north of Adelaide.

The Blyth BESS is designed as a grid-forming system, utilizing over 900 batteries from Chinese manufacturer CATL and inverters from Spanish company Power Electronics. This advanced storage system will provide crucial services like system strength and inertia response, which are traditionally supplied by coal or gas-powered generation.

The $337 million project received $17 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and is set to play a key role in supporting the transition to a renewable energy grid that can operate with 100% instantaneous renewable generation.

In addition, the Blyth BESS will enhance the performance of Neoen’s Goyder South Stage 1 wind project, enabling a 70 MW renewable baseload power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP)’s Olympic Dam mine, located in South Australia. The facility is connected to ElectraNet’s transmission network through the existing 275 kV Blyth West substation.
