Despite the Queensland government’s recent shift away from renewable energy, UK-based developer Cubico Sustainable Investments is pushing ahead with a significant new project in the state.
Cubico has announced plans for the Marmadua Energy Park, a major wind and battery storage project on the Western Downs, located 225 kilometers west of Brisbane. The proposed energy park will feature up to 110 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 792 megawatts (MW), along with a 200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
Marmadua, a rural area nestled between three state forests, is already home to several renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and battery installations. However, the area also contains coal seam gas wells, and the state has traditionally been heavily reliant on coal for power generation.
The announcement comes as the Queensland Liberal government works to reverse years of progress in renewable energy development. The government has pledged to abandon the state’s renewable energy targets, which aimed for 50% renewable energy by 2030 and 80% by 2035. The state remains the most coal-dependent in Australia, with coal making up 65% of its energy supply over the last year. The government is also focused on extending the life of aging coal plants and increasing gas power generation.
Despite these policy changes, Cubico is moving forward with its plans, adding Marmadua to its existing 1.45 GW Middle Creek Energy Hub, which will also feature a 200 MWh battery.
