The BMW i3 has been a popular electric vehicle since its debut in 2013, but its range has always been a topic of discussion. The first model, known as the “60,” came with an 18.2-kilowatt-hour battery that offered just 81 miles of range, which, by today’s standards, is quite limited.
Over time, the i3 saw significant improvements in battery capacity. The 94 Ah battery upgrade increased the range to 114 miles, and the 120 Ah battery raised it further to 153 miles. While these upgrades were a big improvement, owners of the original i3 with the 60 Ah battery pack have been left with a much shorter range.
Older i3 models with the 60 Ah battery are now facing even more challenges as battery degradation takes its toll. What once offered 81 miles is now likely to struggle to reach 70 miles on a full charge. This can be manageable for city driving, but longer trips outside of town could become a challenge for owners of these earlier models.
