Singapore has begun installing its first fast chargers for electric vehicles (EVs) at Housing and Development Board (HDB) open-air carparks, catering to the increasing demand for EV infrastructure. The new chargers, located in Bedok Reservoir, Hougang, Ang Mo Kio, and Boon Lay, can add up to 100 km of range to a vehicle in just 10 minutes, significantly reducing charging time compared to the slower, overnight chargers commonly found at HDB carparks.
This development is part of a broader effort to expand the nation’s EV charging infrastructure, with at least 14 additional open-air carparks set to receive fast chargers within the next six months. Historically, most chargers at HDB carparks have been slow chargers, ideal for overnight use, but fast chargers are now becoming more accessible, particularly in commercial and multi-storey carparks.
While EV fast chargers are already available in commercial buildings, the challenges of providing these at public open-air carparks include sufficient power supply, as well as the complexities involved in laying cables due to existing underground utilities and infrastructure.
Charge+ launched its first fast-charging station at Boon Lay Place Market on April 16, with additional stations planned in locations like Beach Road, Bukit Merah, Bukit Panjang, Ghim Moh, Jurong East, and Kallang Bahru by mid-2025. Shell Recharge and SP Mobility have also rolled out fast chargers at open-air carparks at Bedok Reservoir, Hougang, and Ang Mo Kio as of April 1.
This initiative signals a significant step towards making EV ownership more practical and sustainable in Singapore, offering greater convenience and supporting the nation’s green mobility goals.
