Honda has announced plans to develop solid-state batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) that could offer a range of up to 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) on a single charge. This would more than double the range of many current mass-market electric cars.
If successful, this breakthrough could significantly address “range anxiety”—a major obstacle for many potential EV buyers.
In November, Honda revealed a demonstration production line for these new solid-state batteries, with plans to integrate them into its EVs by the second half of the decade. The company intends to make these batteries available at mass-market scale.
Keiji Otsu, president of Honda R&D, emphasized the importance of this technology. “The all-solid-state battery is an innovative technology that will be a game changer in the EV era,” he said. “Batteries will be the key factor in electrification, replacing the engines that have driven automotive progress until now.”
