Equinor has awarded Ocean Installer a contract to replace a compressor module at the Åsgard subsea compression station in the Åsgard field located in the Norwegian Sea’s Haltenbanken region. The goal of the project is to install a new, upgraded compressor module that will provide a higher pressure ratio.
This replacement marks a milestone for the project, as it is the first time that any module in the subsea compression station will be retrieved and replaced using a vessel crane, according to Ocean Installer. The scope of the work includes a test lift, offshore simulation training, pre-commissioning activities, and ROV operations (remotely operated vehicle).
Engineering preparation for the operation has already begun, and offshore work is scheduled to take place later this year. Previously, the modules at the Åsgard subsea station were installed using Ocean Installer’s North Sea Giant vessel, which is equipped with a specially designed handling system.
The subsea compression system plays a crucial role in maintaining production rates from the Midgard and Mikkel fields. The water depth in the area ranges from 240 to 310 meters.
