Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group has chosen TMC Compressors (TMC) to equip six of its new methanol-fuelled container vessels with Smart Air compressors.
These vessels, being built for the global shipping leader Maersk, will benefit from a significant energy saving of up to 40% in their compressed air systems, compared to traditional compressors, according to TMC.
The six 9,000 twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2027. They will feature dual-fuel engines capable of running on both fuel oil and methanol.
Once operational, these vessels are expected to reduce Maersk’s annual greenhouse gas emissions by around 450,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent when running on green methanol.
The Smart Air compressors use frequency-controlled technology to adjust compressor speeds in real-time, aligning with actual air consumption needs. This enables the electrical motor’s speed to automatically adjust to produce only the necessary amount of air, helping to conserve energy and reduce overall power usage.
