BT has abandoned plans to install tens of thousands of on-street electric car chargers after completing a single installation.
Last year, BT’s start-up and digital unit, Etc., made headlines with its initiative to rapidly expand EV charging infrastructure. The plan involved converting old green street cabinets into electric car charging stations. However, BT has now announced that it will end the pilot program after just 12 months, despite having initially earmarked around 60,000 cabinets for conversion.
The single charger that was installed in East Lothian will be decommissioned on 14 February.
Instead of continuing with the charger installation, BT is shifting its focus to enhancing Wi-Fi connectivity for electric vehicle drivers, according to the EV charging industry newsletter Fast Charge.
A BT spokesperson said, “By adopting a pilot process, we have been able to test and explore the challenges faced by on-street EV drivers with charging and identify areas where BT Group can add the most value to the UK EV ecosystem.”
