At CES, John Deere revealed a range of fully autonomous vehicles designed to transform farming, landscaping, and construction. Among the new models showcased were an autonomous tractor, a robot lawn mower, a crewless dump truck, and another driverless tractor specifically designed for orchards.
Jahmy Hindman, John Deere’s Chief Technology Officer, shared the company’s vision for expanding its nearly 30-year-old tech stack into more machines. “We’re extending it to more of our machines to safely run autonomously in these unique and complex environments that our customers work in every day,” Hindman said.
The company emphasized that its autonomous vehicles are truly driverless, with no human operators inside the machines. “When we talk about autonomy, we mean full autonomy,” Hindman explained.
John Deere first introduced its autonomous tractor three years ago, with commercial deliveries beginning in 2022. According to Hindman, many farms are already using these robots to prepare soil for the upcoming planting season.
At a time when some vehicle manufacturers are scaling back their autonomous efforts, John Deere is doubling down on this technology. The company believes its autonomous machines can help address labor shortages in agriculture, while also meeting the rising demands for food, infrastructure, and housing.
