Port of Long Beach to Launch Hands-Free Wireless Charging for Electric Cargo Vehicles

by Harry

The Port of Long Beach is set to introduce hands-free wireless charging for its battery-electric cargo handling equipment, thanks to a $3.3 million grant from the California Energy Commission.

The project, led by International Transportation Service, LLC (ITS), will feature high-power wireless inductive charging technology from InductEV. This will be the company’s first installation at a West Coast port, following its successful deployment at Port Elizabeth in New Jersey.

Titled “Hands-free Charging for Battery Electric Cargo Handling Equipment,” the initiative is part of a $33 million program aimed at advancing electric vehicle charging solutions for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. InductEV’s wireless charging system will allow five cargo handling vehicles to charge while parked, eliminating the need for traditional plug-in charging stations and boosting efficiency and safety.

The system uses inductive charging pads embedded in the ground, which activate automatically when paired with a vehicle-mounted receiver. With charging capacities ranging from 75 kW to 450 kW, the technology enables short, frequent charging sessions throughout the day, reducing the need for overnight charging and optimizing the use of clean energy.

Kim Holtermand, CEO of ITS, said the company is committed to using innovative, environmentally responsible solutions, and wireless charging aligns with ITS’ mission to protect workers and the environment. John F. Rizzo, president and CEO of InductEV, added that wireless inductive charging will play a crucial role as more ports transition to electric fleets.
