The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has granted a trial waiver to PLUS ES to install up to 1,000 pole-mounted, kerbside electric vehicle (EV) chargers across New South Wales and South Australia.
PLUS ES, a subsidiary of Ausgrid, was previously awarded funding by the NSW Government to deploy kerbside chargers as part of the first round of its Kerbside Charging Grant program. The AER’s waiver will allow PLUS ES to test a new metering solution for these chargers, improving both efficiency and cost-effectiveness for public EV charging.
The innovation involves integrating the metering and charging components into a single unit, streamlining the process.
AER chair Clare Savage emphasized that the decision aligns with the AER’s commitment to exploring solutions that benefit consumers and the broader energy market.
“I’m excited to announce this trial waiver for PLUS ES. We look forward to observing how consumers use these chargers and the potential benefits of this metering technology,” she said.
This marks the second waiver granted under the Energy Innovation Toolkit, which supports energy market participants in testing new ideas outside of the existing regulatory framework.
