Camden to Expand EV Charging Network with 570 Sidewalk Chargers by 2026

by Harry

Electric vehicle (EV) drivers in Camden, London, are set to benefit from a major expansion of sidewalk chargers, thanks to a new partnership between Camden Council and Scottish charge point company, Trojan Energy.

The council has awarded Trojan Energy a contract to install over 570 on-street Level 2 EV chargers by 2026. The project will begin with an initial rollout of 70 chargers in July 2025, with additional units added as suitable locations are identified. This expansion follows a successful trial in 2022, which received positive feedback from local EV owners.

Trojan’s 22 kW chargers are designed to sit “flat and flush” with the sidewalk, meaning they don’t take up space or create obstacles for pedestrians. Residents without driveways will be able to use personal adapters to easily connect their EVs to the chargers, which are linked to nearby cabinets through underground cables. The chargers will be grouped in clusters for greater convenience and availability.

To enhance user experience, Trojan launched an app last month that allows drivers to locate chargers, check availability, and review charging history.

The new sidewalk chargers won’t only benefit individual EV owners; they will also support car-sharing programs, helping reduce car ownership in Camden and promoting more sustainable transport options like walking, biking, and public transit. The UK government’s On-street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS) is funding the project.
