Chargepoint operator char.gy has secured a £130 million contract to install over 6,000 kerbside electric vehicle (EV) chargers for Brighton and Hove City Council (BHCC). This initiative is seen as a major step toward facilitating the switch to electric motoring, particularly for those without off-road parking.
The rollout of these public EV chargers will significantly reduce the need for drivers to visit charging stations, allowing them to charge their vehicles near their homes and take advantage of cheaper overnight electricity rates.
John Lewis, CEO of char.gy, called the contract “a huge moment for the UK and its EV ambitions,” adding that the partnership will empower thousands of residents to confidently make the switch to electric vehicles with easy access to charging stations.
BHCC is one of the first local authorities to receive funding through the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (Levi) scheme, designed to help local authorities plan and implement charging infrastructure for residents without off-road parking.
Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood highlighted that the new chargers will make the switch to electric vehicles easier and more convenient, particularly for those without a driveway, while also contributing to emissions reduction, job creation, and long-term sustainability goals.
