Powercor has announced the selection of a site for a new community battery in Maldon, aimed at increasing solar energy exports, enhancing power reliability, and reducing carbon emissions. The 100kW/290kWh battery will be located on Adair Street, directly opposite the Maldon Hospital, following months of consultation with local residents and businesses.
The battery is designed to store excess rooftop solar energy and supply up to 50 nearby properties during peak demand periods for up to three hours. This will enable locals to share more of their excess solar power. Installation is expected to begin in the coming months.
The project is a joint effort between Powercor and the Federal Government’s Community Batteries for Household Solar program.
Andrew Bailey, Powercor’s Head of Network Program Management, stated that after reviewing several potential sites, Adair Street was chosen as the most suitable due to feedback from nearby properties, its minimal visual impact, and the reliability benefits it would bring to the local electricity network.
“The location is ideal as it will provide both community and network benefits, helping locally generated solar power be used locally,” said Mr. Bailey. “The battery will store excess solar generated during the day and discharge it back into the grid when power demand increases in the evening.”
