Aquinnah will not hold a vote on a proposed ban of gas-powered leaf blowers at its upcoming annual spring town meeting. The town’s select board approved the meeting warrant at Monday’s session, confirming that the proposal would not be part of the agenda for the May 13 meeting.
Jeffrey Madison, the town administrator, stated that he was unaware of any leaf blower bylaw being submitted for discussion.
Last week, Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and West Tisbury passed similar bylaws, though each town’s rules vary slightly. The new regulations restrict leaf blower use to certain times of day and seasons, with a complete phaseout of gas-powered models after three years. Chilmark and Tisbury are set to vote on similar measures later this month.
Madison explained that the lack of a submission was due to the proposal not gaining enough support in Aquinnah. Bill Lake, chair of the town’s climate and energy committee, added that the bylaw never came before his committee, although he had talked about the ban with the Vineyard Conservation Society.
