Ridgid Tools has earned its place as one of the leading brands in the power tools industry, a staple in garages, workshops, and job sites around the world. Known for its high-quality power and hand tools, Ridgid has become a trusted name for professionals across various trades. This success, however, didn’t happen overnight.
Founded in 1923 by Carl Ingwer Sr., Ridgid made its mark with the invention of the modern pipe wrench. Over the past century, the company has grown from that initial innovation into a well-established brand recognized for its durability and performance. Today, Ridgid is led by Craig Sumner, who became president in 2021. While Ingwer Sr. is no longer with us, his legacy continues to shape the company. Since 1966, Ridgid has been part of Emerson Electric, which has also acquired other notable brands like Klauke and Greenlee, expanding its reach across various industries.
At its core, Ridgid remains an American company. Established in Elyria, Ohio, in 1923, the brand’s headquarters has been located there ever since, with its doors opening in 1943. The facility has served as the hub for everything from tool manufacturing to corporate affairs. Despite its strong roots in Ohio, Ridgid’s success has also been driven by global expansion, particularly in the manufacturing of its iconic pipe wrenches. For example, the iron wrench handles are produced at the Erie, Pennsylvania-based Urick Foundry.
But Ridgid is far more than just its pipe wrenches. Over the years, the brand has expanded its product lineup to include a wide range of power tools. Many of these tools are produced in partnership with Techtronic Industries (TTI), a Hong Kong-based company behind other renowned brands like Milwaukee and Ryobi. Specifically, Ridgid’s AEG line of tools is branded for the U.S. market under the Ridgid name.
As Ridgid continues to innovate and expand, it remains a symbol of quality craftsmanship, whether it’s in its hometown of Elyria or across the globe.
