India’s BatX Energies Launches Advanced Battery Recycling Plant

by Harry

BatX Energies Pvt Ltd, a leader in lithium-ion battery recycling, has officially opened its state-of-the-art Critical Minerals Extraction facility, HUB-1, in Uttar Pradesh. The new plant is designed to extract essential materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese from used lithium-ion batteries. This move aims to reduce India’s reliance on imports, support the country’s growing electric vehicle (EV) market, and contribute to the Net Zero 2070 target as well as the AtmaNirbhar Bharat initiative.

The inauguration of HUB-1 follows the success of BatX’s Black Mass production unit in Sikandrabad, which was launched in late 2022. The new facility, developed after a 21-month pilot program started in mid-2023, uses BatX’s proprietary hydrometallurgical process to recover high-purity materials for use in battery production.

HUB-1 is capable of recycling all types of lithium-ion battery waste, including rejects from emerging gigafactories. The facility addresses challenges related to sourcing critical materials outside of China, offering a vertically integrated solution that combines material extraction with second-life applications for batteries. Operating with minimal energy consumption and adhering to stringent environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards, the plant is a zero-emission, zero-waste operation and complies with India’s Battery Waste Management Rules 2022.
