Pure Lithium, a Boston-based startup, has revealed groundbreaking results in its lithium metal battery technology. The company claims to have achieved cycling results that have never been reported before, further proving the commercial potential of its innovation.
The privately-held company has developed a unique lithium metal battery that replaces traditional nickel and cobalt with vanadium. Additionally, Pure Lithium has found a way to produce lithium batteries from scratch in less than 48 hours, using lithium brine to create the battery.
According to Pure Lithium, its battery outperforms conventional lithium-ion batteries and does not require graphite, a material that is predominantly processed in China.
The company’s lithium metal anode pouch cells, combined with a proprietary electrolyte, have now completed more than 2,200 charge and discharge cycles, each lasting one hour. The cells maintain over 80% of their original capacity after these cycles, which are conducted at 100% depth of discharge—an achievement competitors have not matched. The cells are still performing well beyond the reported cycles.
“I’m excited to share these transformative results, which no other company has come close to achieving,” said Emilie Bodoin, founder and CEO of Pure Lithium. “Lithium metal batteries are considered the ‘holy grail’ of energy storage, offering twice the capacity and half the weight of current lithium-ion batteries.”
Bodoin emphasized that the company’s results exceed commercial specifications, providing longer-lasting solutions for applications that are typically powered by lithium-ion batteries.
