The familiar hum of gas-powered leaf blowers could soon be a thing of the past on Martha’s Vineyard as conservationists push to restrict their use. The Vineyard Conservation Society is leading efforts to introduce regulations at annual town meetings across all six Island towns. These regulations would initially limit when landscapers can use gas-powered leaf blowers, with a goal of instituting a full ban by 2028.
Town committees in Chilmark, Edgartown, and Oak Bluffs have already drafted articles addressing the issue. Supporters, including the conservation society, argue that the ban is necessary to reduce the noise and pollution associated with these machines.
Zada Clarke, director of advocacy for the Vineyard Conservation Society, emphasized that the proposed bylaw seeks to address the negative impacts of constant gas-powered leaf blower use. “It’s about challenging the idea that constant noise is ‘the new normal’ and asking our entire community whether we want to continue sacrificing our collective quality of life and the health of our environment,” she said.
