New Orleans is set to receive a boost in its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, thanks to a $9.3 million federal grant through the Federal Highway Administration’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure program. The funding will facilitate the installation of 58 public EV chargers across the city, focusing on underserved and disadvantaged neighborhoods.
The new chargers, which will include a combination of Level 2 and DC Fast Chargers, will be placed at publicly owned sites throughout all five City Council districts. Although specific locations are still being finalized, the initial sites were identified through a community survey conducted in 2021. Two installations will be strategically located at Xavier University and Dillard University, providing enhanced access for students and residents in areas like Gert Town, Mid-City, and Gentilly.
This initiative is a key part of New Orleans’ broader efforts to electrify its vehicle fleet, with a goal to have 40% of vehicles powered by electricity by 2035. The project aligns with the city’s ambitious Climate Action Plan, which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 50%. By making clean and sustainable transportation more accessible to all residents, New Orleans is making significant strides toward a greener future.
