Australia Issues Recall on Unsafe Ozzi Heat Wall Heaters Over Fire Risk

by Harry

Australia’s consumer product safety regulator, ACCC Product Safety, has issued a recall for the Ozzi Heat portable wall heater due to safety concerns. The product, which was sold on the Ozzi Mozzie website between April 27, 2024, and September 22, 2024, is at risk of causing burns or fires.

The recall was prompted by the heater’s plug design, which inserts directly into socket-outlets, failing to meet Australian safety standards. There is a potential hazard of overheating that could damage wall fittings, socket outlets, or fixed wiring, leading to fire risks.

This recall follows earlier reports from consumer advocacy group Choice, which alerted the ACCC about similar safety issues with plug-in electric heaters. Choice’s UK counterpart tested 10 such heaters and found all of them failed safety standards, with several posing fire or explosion risks due to counterfeit fuses.

In response, Choice reached out to the ACCC in February 2023, and by late 2023, updates to the electrical safety standards for heaters were made to prevent unsafe devices from being sold in Australia. After Choice contacted Amazon and eBay, the platforms began investigating the sale of these heaters.

As part of the recall, the Ozzi Heat wall heater is now banned from being sold online or in stores across Australia.
