Czech Restaurant Fire Kills Six, Sparks Safety Concerns Over Gas Heaters

by Harry

An investigation is underway following a deadly fire at a restaurant in Most, a town north of Prague, which resulted in six fatalities and left eight others injured. The blaze, which is now considered the third worst fire in the country’s modern history, has raised concerns over the safety of gas heaters commonly used in restaurants, which are believed to have caused the incident.

The fire broke out at the popular restaurant U Kojota close to midnight on Saturday, while it was still crowded with patrons. Eyewitnesses described how the restaurant was quickly engulfed in flames. One survivor reported that a drunken man fell onto one of the propane-butane gas heaters, causing it to overturn and explode, sparking the fire. Although this account has not been officially confirmed, it could explain the rapid spread of the fire, which trapped some guests inside.

Firefighters arrived at the scene within six minutes, but despite their quick response, some guests could not be saved. However, the team successfully rescued several people, including one severely injured individual trapped in the toilets. The head of the rescue operation later noted that the firefighters’ familiarity with the restaurant layout helped in the rescue efforts.

The injured were quickly given first aid and transported to hospitals in Most, Ústí nad Labem, and Prague for further treatment.
