L.A. County Bans Leaf Blowers Amid Wildfire Recovery and Health Concerns

by Harry

Los Angeles County has implemented a temporary ban on the use of power air blowers, including leaf blowers, in response to hazardous air quality resulting from recent wildfires and strong winds. The ban, issued by the L.A. County Department of Public Health on January 14, is aimed at protecting public health during wildfire recovery efforts.

The ban seeks to limit the inhalation of wildfire ash and smoke, which can cause significant respiratory issues. According to the Department of Public Health, ash is a fine, dangerous dust that can be inhaled deep into the lungs. The prohibition will remain in place until the County Health Officer determines that conditions have improved enough to safely use these devices.

County Health Officer Muntu Davis highlighted the severity of the situation, stating, “Ash is like a fine, dangerous dust that can be inhaled deep into the lungs and can cause major problems everywhere it lands.” The ban is part of a broader local health emergency declaration addressing environmental hazards, including the closure of Claremont Hills Wilderness Park due to Red Flag conditions.

Residents are encouraged to follow additional safety guidance issued by the Department of Public Health as the county navigates the emergency period.
