International Battery Company (IBC), a U.S.-based firm, has announced plans to establish a Rs 390 crore lithium-ion gigafactory in Karnataka. Located in the KIADB ITIR industrial area in Devanahalli, the facility is expected to begin operations within nine months and will create 300 direct jobs.
In partnership with Mahanagar Gas, IBC’s gigafactory will be India’s first dedicated battery cell manufacturing plant. This move is a significant step for India’s battery sector, as it aims to reduce reliance on battery imports, particularly from China. Currently, IBC imports battery cells from South Korea for final assembly in India, and the new facility will streamline local production, promoting self-reliance in the sector.
The Karnataka state government has allocated 10 acres of land near Foxconn’s manufacturing hub for the project. The gigafactory will focus on producing lithium-ion batteries for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and other vehicles, meeting growing demand in both domestic and international markets. The plant is also set to export 20% of its production to the U.S. and Europe, reinforcing India’s role in the global battery market.
During the foundation stone-laying ceremony, M B Patil, Minister of Large and Medium Scale Industries, highlighted the project’s significance for both Karnataka and India. “The new manufacturing unit will boost Karnataka’s economy, strengthen our position as a leader in advanced manufacturing, and reduce India’s reliance on foreign battery imports, especially from China,” he said.
This gigafactory will play a crucial role in India’s clean energy push. As electric vehicle adoption increases across the country, the facility’s local production capabilities will help meet the growing demand for sustainable transport solutions.
