Freret Hardware owner Rick Torres reports a busy winter, with strong sales of natural gas and electric heaters to help New Orleans residents stay warm during the cold snap.
“We have sufficient supply to get us through this weather,” Torres said.
The Fox 8 Weather Center has warned of potentially dangerous winter conditions. Torres expects many people will be staying indoors to stay warm, but he cautions that using too many space heaters at once can lead to fire risks.
“You cannot just assume that your home’s electrical system can handle multiple space heaters,” Torres said.
He also warned that using small extension cords with electric heaters can create problems.
“If the extension cord acts like a fuse and the wire melts, it can cause a fire,” he explained.
