U.S. Department of Energy Announces $1.35M to Boost Wood Heater Innovation

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) has announced $1.35 million in Phase 2 funding for three projects aimed at advancing wood heater technology. These projects will help develop the next generation of efficient and clean wood heaters.

The funding, managed by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), will support the Wood Heater Innovation Collaboration (WHIC) and the FY24 Wood Heater Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). WHIC will work with the national labs and award recipients to develop and test innovative wood heater technologies.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, millions of U.S. households rely on wood heaters for home heating. This method continues to be an affordable way to heat homes using low-carbon, renewable fuel. The CRADA funding will help the industry modernize wood heating stoves, making them cleaner and more efficient while potentially reducing household energy costs.
