Fairmont has received a $75,670 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to fund the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the city’s downtown area. The grant, approved by the Fairmont City Council in January 2024, will help the city install up to five charging stations.
City Planner Shae Strait hopes to get the project underway this summer. While the original plan was to place the charging stations in the alley between the Marion County Public Library and the Adams Street greenspace, Strait now recommends a more ideal location three blocks down at the downtown parking garage. This move is due to potential future capital improvements at the library, which may interfere with the initial site.
The revised location near the parking garage on Madison Street is expected to be just as suitable, without any upcoming projects that could complicate the installation of EV chargers.
