Anthony Maglica may not be a household name, but his creation is something almost everyone has used at least once: the MAGLITE flashlight. Even if you rely on your Android phone’s flashlight, you’ve likely heard of the brand. Maglica is the president and founder of Mag Instrument, Inc., and the mastermind behind the iconic MAGLITE, which has been a favorite of law enforcement officers for decades.
Born in New York City during the 1930s, Maglica moved to Croatia with his mother in his early years to be closer to her family. He lived there until the 1950s before returning to the United States and settling in Los Angeles. Now, over 90 years old, Maglica continues to personally inspect every new product from his company, ensuring each one meets his high standards before it hits the market.
Maglite’s first flashlights were introduced in 1979 and quickly became the go-to tool for police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel. The quality and reliability of the product earned it the nickname “Cadillac of flashlights” from media outlets. As the business grew, Maglica moved operations from Los Angeles to a more inland location, where the company’s sole factory remains today.
