As the temperatures continue to drop, the Kingsport Fire Department is urging residents to take extra precautions when using portable heaters to stay warm. Fire safety is a top priority, and following a few simple guidelines can help prevent heater-related fires.
The Kingsport Fire Department recommends keeping portable heaters at least 3 feet away from any combustible materials and placing them only on solid, stable surfaces. Additionally, heaters should never be placed in walkways or areas where they might be knocked over.
Kingsport Firefighter James Kyle Jennings offers two additional important safety tips to help prevent heater fires:
Never Leave Heaters Unattended: Always turn off portable heaters when leaving a room or going to bed. Even if you’ve been using them safely for hours, leaving them on unattended increases the risk of accidents.
Inspect the Heater Regularly: Ensure the heater is in good working condition by checking for any damage or frayed cords. Damaged cords or faulty equipment can spark fires.
By following these simple yet essential safety steps, you can enjoy a warm and safe winter season in your home.
