Banks County fire officials are investigating a potential wood heater malfunction as the cause of a fire that moderately damaged a home east of Homer on Tuesday afternoon.
Firefighters responded to the emergency call at 1:45 p.m. and arrived at the residence located at 973 Highway 51 North. Upon arrival, smoke was visible from the rear of the structure. Fire crews quickly contained the fire to the room of origin and the attic area.
According to Banks County Fire Chief Steve Nichols, the resident was present at the time of the fire, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. Firefighters remained on-site for several hours to investigate the cause of the blaze. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities could not rule out the home’s wood heater system as a potential source of the fire. The fire department emphasized the importance of regular maintenance and inspection of wood heaters to prevent similar incidents.
