InductEV Launches Wireless EV Charging at Port of Long Beach

by Harry

Wireless EV charging specialist InductEV is teaming up with International Transportation Service (ITS) to install high-power inductive chargers at the Port of Long Beach.

ITS has secured a $3.3 million grant from the California Energy Commission for the project, named Hands-free Charging for Battery Electric Cargo Handling Equipment. The initiative will showcase charging solutions for medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles (EVs).

InductEV’s inductive charging technology will charge five of ITS’s battery-electric cargo handling vehicles while they are parked. This marks InductEV’s first installation at a West Coast port facility, following a successful deployment at APM Terminals in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, last year.

InductEV’s wireless system features an in-ground charging pad and an under-vehicle pad, with power levels ranging from 75 kW to 450 kW. The solution requires no additional real estate compared to traditional wired charging and offers hands-free operation, which improves safety for drivers. It shifts the charging model from long overnight sessions at depots to shorter, more frequent charging periods throughout the day.

“We are proud to partner with the ITS team to help them realize their vision for a more efficient and environmentally friendly solution to power their fleet,” said InductEV CEO John F. Rizzo. “As more ports and freight terminals electrify their fleets, we expect wireless inductive charging to play a key role in this transition.”
