The City of Ann Arbor has introduced new discount and rebate programs to support the transition from gas-powered to electric lawn care equipment.
Starting March 1, these initiatives are part of the city’s broader “leaf blower ordinance,” which aims to reduce gas-powered equipment usage. The programs are designed to help lower the cost of upgrading equipment:
The Electric Lawn Care Equipment Program will offer discounts on electric lawn equipment purchased between March 1 and May 31, 2025. Ann Arbor residents, as well as lawn care and landscaping businesses working for local residents, can participate in the program.
The Electric Leaf Blower Rebate Program targets commercial businesses that provide lawn care and landscaping services within Ann Arbor. The rebate applies to electric or battery-powered leaf blowers purchased from any retailer during the same timeframe, with participants required to trade in a gas-powered leaf blower to qualify for the rebate.
In December 2023, the Ann Arbor City Council passed the leaf blower ordinance, which will limit the use of gas-powered leaf blowers from June to September through 2027 and ban them completely starting in 2028.
“The purpose of this ordinance is not only to promote sustainability goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also to protect the health and welfare of Ann Arbor residents by reducing noise and air pollution,” the city’s press release stated.
The City of Ann Arbor’s Office of Sustainability and Innovations, established in 2018, spearheaded these efforts to foster a greener, cleaner community.
