Conditions in Los Angeles County have improved as the recent fires have been contained, leading to a reduction in hazardous smoke and particulate matter. In response, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has revised its Health Office Order issued on January 10, which temporarily banned the use of power air blowers due to poor air quality.
The updated order now limits the ban to areas within the Palisades and Eaton Wildfire Perimeter Areas, as defined by CAL FIRE and The Wildland Fire Interagency Geospatial Services (WFIGS) Group. This restriction will remain in place until the County Health Officer determines that recovery conditions have progressed to a point where air-blower use will no longer negatively impact public health.
Power air blowers can now be used throughout Los Angeles County, except within the specified wildfire perimeter areas. However, in areas where significant ash and dust remain, the County Health Officer advises individuals to consider alternatives such as gentle sweeping followed by wet mopping or using HEPA vacuums. Additionally, anyone cleaning up fire-related ash and dust should wear appropriate respiratory, eye, and skin protection to reduce exposure risks.
A Local Health Emergency was declared on January 10 due to the widespread impacts of the ongoing fires and windstorm conditions. This declaration remains in effect as fire events continue to pose significant health and safety risks for residents.
