A barn fire in Polk County on Monday afternoon is believed to have been caused by a space heater. The Des Moines Fire Department responded to the blaze at around 3:20 p.m. in the 4500 block of Leland Avenue, located southeast of Des Moines and northwest of Carlisle.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a barn engulfed in flames. According to officials, the fire started after the barn owner turned on a 100 lbs. propane tank recently installed in a lean-to for the space heater. The owner briefly left the area and returned to find the fire had spread from the small shed to the barn.
Firefighters battled the blaze for more than two hours, facing challenges due to the large amount of hay inside the barn. Fortunately, no animals or people were injured in the fire.
