Danfoss is introducing an innovative economizer designed for cold climate heat pumps, reflecting its commitment to decarbonization and the shift toward electric heating. This new economizer, which includes a brazed plate heat exchanger and an extra expansion device, allows scroll compressors with vapor injection, such as the Danfoss PSH vapor injection compressor, to perform efficiently in demanding conditions.
Cold climate heat pumps typically face challenging ambient conditions that result in high compression ratios, causing compressors to consume more energy. The economizer reduces the workload on the compressor, improving energy efficiency. It works by subcooling the refrigerant before it enters the expansion valve, which enhances its heat absorption in the evaporator and boosts heating performance in cold climates.
By providing cooler refrigerant during compression, the economizer also helps extend the compressor’s lifespan. The Danfoss economizer features a highly efficient brazed plate heat exchanger with bi-metal connections, making installation easier and faster. Manufacturers can now connect copper tubing to the brazed plate without needing high-content silver or flux, simplifying the process.
