Residents of Central Okanagan can receive rebates of up to $150 when they trade in their old gas-powered leaf blowers, lawnmowers, trimmers, or chainsaws for new, quieter electric models. This initiative is part of an effort to reduce emissions and improve air quality in the community.
According to Statistics Canada, gas-powered lawn equipment releases approximately 80,000 tonnes of emissions in Canada annually, using 151 million litres of gas. This new program aims to mitigate those environmental impacts by encouraging residents to switch to electric alternatives.
Rebate Details
Maximum Rebate: $150 (up to 50% of the cost of new equipment)
Eligible Equipment: Electric models that meet noise rating limits of 65 decibels (db) for leaf blowers and 75 db for lawnmowers. Noise rating is not required for chainsaws and hedge trimmers.
Requirements
Purchase receipt for new electric equipment
Proof of recycling the old gas-powered equipment (receipt or photos from recycling facility)
Equipment must be drained of oil or gas before recycling
The rebate is limited to one per household, and funding is limited, so it will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. To qualify, residents must also complete the Lawn Swap Go Electric online application form.
This initiative is supported by the Regional District Central Okanagan (RDCO) and aims to foster cleaner, quieter alternatives for lawn and garden maintenance.
