Volklec, a battery manufacturing company based in the Midlands, has taken a significant step toward scaling up its operations. The company has signed an exclusive license agreement with Far East Battery (FEB), a leading Asian supplier of energy storage solutions and electric vehicle (EV) power.
FEB, which has been designing and manufacturing batteries globally since 2009, will transfer technology and expertise to Volklec. This partnership will allow Volklec to start producing lithium-ion batteries in the UK, with production slated to begin later this year at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) in Coventry.
Volklec’s long-term plans include building a 10GWh gigafactory, with an investment exceeding £1 billion. The gigafactory is expected to create more than 1,000 skilled jobs by the end of the decade.
Phil Popham, Executive Director of Volklec, emphasized the need for independent battery manufacturers in the UK: “The electric revolution in transport and mobility is happening now, and the British start-up scene is thriving across various sectors. However, there’s a significant gap in the battery supply chain. The UK has a strong presence in specialist and high-performance industries that require reliable, high-quality battery supply. Our mission is to support these innovators and ensure they have the resources they need to succeed.”
