The City of Davis has partnered with Paired Power to install a PairTree solar electric vehicle (EV) charging station at Playfields Park. This solar-powered system operates off-grid, ensuring reliable charging even during power outages, while contributing to energy savings. Designed for easy installation, the system can be set up in just one day.
Tom McCalmont, CEO of Paired Power, highlighted the significance of the project: “The goal of making electric vehicles accessible to everyone requires scalable solutions that can be deployed quickly in locations where there is little to no grid power. We’re proud to work with the City of Davis to expand access to solar-powered EV charging.”
The PairTree system at Playfields Park features two Level 2 charging ports that deliver a rate of up to 7.7kW for a single vehicle or 4kW per vehicle for two vehicles charging simultaneously. The station is compatible with all electric vehicles, including Teslas.
Charging at the station is free, and no apps, cards, or accounts are required to use the service. However, there is a two-hour limit on the charging spaces to ensure fair access for all users.
Davis Mayor Bapu Vaitla expressed enthusiasm about the development: “The installation at Playfields Park is an exciting addition to our city. This park serves as a central hub for families and athletes, and we’re thrilled to offer free, renewable electric vehicle charging as part of our clean energy initiatives.”
The project is part of the Electrify Yolo initiative, which seeks to expand public access to EV charging in the region. Funded by the 2018 SACOG Green Region grant, Electrify Yolo aims to increase the availability of sustainable transportation options throughout Yolo County.
