Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has introduced a revolutionary battery and charging system that provides an impressive 400 km range in just 5 minutes of charging. This breakthrough comes as part of BYD’s efforts to strengthen its position over competitors, including Tesla. The new technology will first debut on the Han L and Tang L models, priced at 270,000 yuan ($37,338) and 280,000 yuan, respectively, set for release next month.
Charging Breakthrough
BYD’s new battery and charging platform promises to address one of the major barriers to electric vehicle (EV) adoption — long charging times. By offering charging speeds comparable to refueling a traditional car, this innovation has the potential to transform consumer attitudes toward EVs. With the ability to add 400 km in just 5 minutes, BYD is setting a new standard for fast charging.
Competition Heats Up
BYD’s charging platform outpaces Tesla’s Superchargers, which add up to 275 kilometers of range in 15 minutes. Mercedes-Benz is also getting in on the action, with their CLA electric sedan achieving 325 km in just 10 minutes of charging. Although Tesla currently leads the fast-charging network with over 65,000 Supercharger stations worldwide, BYD is planning to expand its charging infrastructure across China, strengthening its competitive edge in the market.
