Fannin County Commissioners have approved the formation of a 391 Commission in collaboration with the City of Savoy, following concerns about a battery and energy storage system being built near the town.
The facility, currently under construction by Houston-based Engie, will store energy in batteries to help supply the grid during peak demand or periods of instability. The site is located along US 82, just north of Savoy.
Savoy Mayor Rodger Cada expressed concerns about the stability of certain components used in data centers and battery facilities, noting a history of instability in similar projects across the country. “From history alone, we can tell that certain components used in data centers or battery locations can be unstable from time to time,” said Cada.
The 391 Commission is a regional planning body designed to help local governments address developments like this one. It aims to tackle issues related to transportation, utilities, and safety while providing legal frameworks for managing new projects in the area.
“It allows us to have, and put in place, legal laws that we can use to help govern what comes into our area,” added Mayor Cada.
