Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. has announced the commencement of construction for a demonstration facility dedicated to its KM Comp-H₂, a centrifugal hydrogen compressor designed for use in hydrogen liquefaction plants. The facility is being built at the company’s Harima Works in Hyogo Prefecture, with construction starting on February 10, 2025.
This project is part of the Green Innovation Fund, under the initiative “Development of large-scale high-efficiency machinery for hydrogen liquefiers,” sponsored by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The demonstration machine has already been completed, and construction of the facility is now underway. Notably, this compressor is the world’s first centrifugal hydrogen compressor specifically designed for hydrogen liquefaction plants.
The demonstration facility is expected to be completed by November 2025, followed by a year of operational testing. This compressor plays a crucial role in boosting the pressure of refrigerant hydrogen gas, which is used to cool the feed hydrogen gas, a key component in liquefied hydrogen production. By improving the efficiency of the liquefaction process, the compressor will help lower hydrogen supply costs.
Kawasaki, leveraging more than 50 years of expertise in compressors for the energy and resources sectors, is developing this large-scale centrifugal hydrogen compressor designed for 100% pure hydrogen, aiming to significantly enhance liquefaction efficiency.
